Thailand maintains a strict, complete ban on electronic cigarettes, and tourists caught using or carrying vaping devices face severe penalties, including hefty on-the-spot fines and potential imprisonment.

  • Strict Prohibition: E-cigarettes and related items like e-liquids have been completely illegal in Thailand since 2014.
  • Severe Penalties: Violators risk massive fines and up to five years in prison for repeat offenses.
  • No Exceptions: Ignorance of the law is not an excuse, and foreign travelers are frequently subjected to immediate police action.

Tourists traveling to Thailand are being urgently warned about the country’s strict ban on electronic cigarettes. This follows a recent incident where a vacationing couple was detained and heavily fined for vaping on a beach, highlighting the severe legal risks foreigners face under the 2014 public health law.

Sara Green, a 43-year-old tourist visiting with her family, experienced the harsh reality of these regulations firsthand. Authorities caught Green and her partner using e-cigarettes, immediately informing them of the ban before escorting them to a local police station—an experience Green described as highly intimidating.

The couple was fined 40,000 Thai Baht (approximately AUD$1,778). According to Green, police initially demanded a higher amount but settled after the couple reached their daily ATM withdrawal limits. Authorities also issued a stern warning: a repeat offense could result in up to five years in prison.

The Embassy of Thailand has issued clear advisories regarding the prohibition, emphasizing that the law applies equally to Thai nationals and foreign visitors. According to official guidelines, travelers must be aware of the following:

  • Zero Tolerance: Devices and e-liquids cannot be brought into the country, even if intended to help the user quit smoking.
  • Financial Penalties: Fines can amount to several times the value of the prohibited items.
  • Public Health Focus: The government implemented the ban in 2014 specifically to prevent young people from adopting smoking habits.

Authorities strongly advise all travelers to leave their e-cigarettes and vaping accessories at home to avoid arrest, extortionate fines, or imprisonment while holidaying in the kingdom.
