An updated systematic review by Cochrane has determined that regulated nicotine e-cigarettes help more people stop smoking than traditional nicotine replacement therapies (NRT), such as patches and gum. With combustible tobacco smoking responsible for more than 7 million preventable deaths globally each year, the findings offer strong evidence for alternative harm-reduction strategies.

The analysis evaluated data from 80 randomized controlled trials involving 29,861 participants, incorporating nine new trials in its latest release. The researchers found high-certainty evidence demonstrating that e-cigarettes consistently produce higher cessation rates than conventional methods.
Comparing Cessation Rates Across Quit Methods
The evidence indicates that nicotine e-cigarettes outperform standard smoking cessation aids across multiple control groups. Specifically, using a nicotine vape generated roughly four extra quitters per 100 people compared to traditional NRT methods, and two extra quitters per 100 people compared to nicotine-free e-cigarettes.

The authors stressed that their findings apply solely to legally regulated nicotine devices. Counterfeit products or illicit devices containing uncontrolled substances, such as THC, carry unverified risks. Additionally, public health agencies continue to monitor youth usage, emphasizing that non-smokers and minors should avoid all nicotine products.
Health specialists recommend viewing e-cigarettes as a transitional tool rather than a permanent destination. The research team is currently preparing a follow-up review focusing on interventions to help individuals eventually stop vaping after they have successfully quit combustible tobacco.
