The ChatGPT iOS app has seen remarkable growth, achieving 29.6 million downloads in the last 28 days, making it one of the world's most popular applications. This download volume notably exceeds the combined total of major social media apps TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter) over the same period, which was approximately 32.9 million, a difference of just 10.6%. This rapid success highlights ChatGPT's powerful appeal, especially given the long-established market presence of these social media giants.
According to data from analytics firm Similarweb, ChatGPT ranked first in global app downloads in April, surpassing competitors like Instagram and TikTok. Recent court documents also revealed that as of March, ChatGPT had approximately 600 million monthly active users, compared to about 350 million for Google's Gemini. However, Similarweb also reported that on Android devices, Gemini's downloads have now exceeded ChatGPT's, indicating a competitive landscape within Google's ecosystem.
Since its launch in November 2022, ChatGPT quickly became a sensation, attracting its first million users in just five days. A recent Pew Research Center report noted that 34% of U.S. adults have used ChatGPT, a figure that has doubled since 2023, though 66% still report never having used it. OpenAI continues to enhance the app, integrating its image generation technology, adding advanced voice interaction modes, and integrating with Apple's Siri, positioning its chatbot as the go-to universal AI assistant for mainstream consumers.
